Abstract

Pakistan faces growing energy demands, dependence on conventional energy sources, and the need for cleaner and more reliable electricity generation. This study examined the potential of advanced functional materials and photovoltaic technologies for sustainable energy generation in Pakistan. A quantitative, cross-sectional research design was adopted, and data were collected from 384 renewable-energy professionals, engineers, researchers, academics, and energy-sector experts through a structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, reliability and validity tests, correlation analysis, and Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The findings indicated that advanced functional materials, photovoltaic performance, environmental adaptability, technological innovation, economic feasibility, and policy and infrastructure support significantly influenced photovoltaic technology adoption and sustainable energy generation. The proposed model explained 72% of the variance in sustainable energy generation, demonstrating substantial explanatory power. PV technology adoption showed the strongest direct effect on sustainable energy generation. The study concluded that advanced materials, including perovskites, quantum dots, nanostructures, and tandem technologies, could contribute substantially to Pakistan's solar-energy transition when supported by appropriate infrastructure, investment, research capacity, and energy policies. The findings provide useful implications for policymakers, researchers, investors, and energy-sector stakeholders seeking to accelerate sustainable photovoltaic deployment in Pakistan.
